My mum has always wished that she’d stuck in at school a bit more, so I’ve been telling her for ages about the amazing home learning opportunities that now exist.

There are a host of courses covering a wide range of arts and science subjects, so she could literally study for just about any sort of degree she wanted – from mathematics to marketing and from philosophy to physics. She had a look online to find companies offering home study courses (see here) and couldn’t believe how many there were.

All she has to do now is decide which of these illustrious distance learning (find out more) companies she’s going to entrust with providing her long-overdue further education.

HIV test – educating people about risk

People are often worried about taking an HIV test, and understandably so. However, while government, schools and NHS trust may try to educate people about the risks it seems the message may not be getting through.

Recent figures show that many people are ignorant of the risk of unprotected sex or sharing needles when it comes to HIV transmission.

The only way to combat this is through education. After all, when I was at school sex education focused only on biology – it needs to be much more all-encompassing.

Organisations such as the Family Planning Association (FPA) can help with any information you may need.

Part of the education programme – spotting herpes symptoms

Kids these days are taught all about the “birds and the bees” from an early age through sex education at school.

It starts late on in primary school and stretches through to high school, but when it matters when you’re a bit older, it can feel that help and advice is hard to find.

It can be embarrassing, you know, having to go and ask the doctor about a “personal” problem.

That’s where the Internet can be a huge help in educating about sexual diseases (like diagnosing herpes symptoms) and other nasties. Try sites like this one for information.

And sure, you’ll still need to go to the doctor if the problem persists, but it can save some embarrassment.

The British Medical Journal (BMJ) offers a wide range of medical education courses to help health care professionals keep up to date with the latest developments in their chosen field.

Continuing professional development (CPD) is very important in medicine, as not only is it a very broad subject, but new research is always underway which can change the way diseases and conditions are understood and treated.

Medical professionals have to undergo periodic training sessions to ensure that they keep on top of their subject and are aware of the latest thinking on important issues relating to their area of expertise.

For any novice cook, a picnic can be quite a daunting experience. You’re have to make food that appeals to a wide range of tastes, as well as food that can be eaten by hand with the minimum of mess.

Fortunately, there are plenty of places where you can learn simple recipes. These can be prepared the day before and stored in the fridge before it is time to stock up the picnic hamper.

You can even follow a nutritionally balanced picnic menu – although this is probably for more ambitious chefs.

Learning to cook, wherever you do it, is a vital part of education. And a picnic is a great test, as well as a fun day out.

Lightweight roofing tiles – advantages to builders

There are many advantages of lightweight roofing tiles, and it is important you learn about them when planning a building job.

For example, one of your most important considerations will be the environment. And a simple way to cut down on emissions is to reduce the number of deliveries to the site.

By switching to compact lightweight roof tiles, my company only needed one lorry load of tiles to fit the roof during the last development. Using traditional clay tiles, which take up much more space, it could have been three lorry loads.

There are many different types of lightweight roof tiles, but me and my business are sticking to the compact, multilayered option.

After all, using quality tiles is important if you want to retain a National Federation of Roofing Contractors licence. Click here for more about the NFRC.
